The aim is to develop students' competence in language and an understanding of themselves and others. This is achieved principally through the study of literature, media and nonfiction, which provides material for discussion, comprehension work, models for imitative writing, and stimulus for creative writing. The technical accuracy (spelling, punctuation, etc.) of students' writing is also enhanced by these activities. In addition we have a developmental approach in the teaching of all language skills. Books are selected from a variety of cultures, enhancing the preparation of children for life in a multi-cultural society. Particular attention is paid to the equality of opportunity for all students to achieve their full potential. Regular and thorough homework is a necessity for the successful study of English at secondary level. Class time is divided between reading, writing and discussion. We also encourage the re-drafting of written assignments, believing that students can do a great deal towards improving their own language usage. The Department operates a system of continuous teacher and student self-assessment to enhance statutory assessments. At the end of Year 9 students take Key Stage 3 Standard
Assessment Tasks (SATs) and normally would be expected to attain between levels 3 and 7. It is intended that all students be entered for English Language and the majority for Literature as well, at G.C.S.E Level.
