WELCOME TO THE MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT

Mrs M Brown
French is offered as the first foreign language at present from Year 7 - 11, leading to G.C.S.E. (AQA), or AQA Unit Award.
German is the second foreign language and is offered in Key Stages 3 & 4. Following a period of study in both languages during Year 7 & 8, students will then choose to either continuewith both languages or to select either French or German leading to GCSE in Key Stage 4.
A small number of students are encouraged to take GCSE in Community Languages and students with another language may gain a qualification if available and appropriate.
A wide range of materials and resources is available for all courses offered, including audiovisual and Information Communication Technology. The Faculty has many resources and materials for independent learning. There is a specialised languages support base, which is adjacent to the teaching rooms. Further material is available in the whole school resources base.
For French the main course book in Key Stage 3 & 4 is 'Equipe', and for German ‘Klasse’.
These courses are supplemented by a variety of readers, magazines and different materials suited to students and their experience. Language lessons are based on a communicative approach and students are encouraged to take an active part, for example making recordings, role-playing situations and group or pair work. Students are encouraged to write to pen pals, and in Years 10 and 11 there are contacts through e-mail and exchanges can be arranged on an individual basis.
The Faculty organises trips abroad on a regular basis during Activity Week. The Faculty also participates in the Celebration of Languages in Kirklees ( COLIK) which offers students an opportunity to use their languages in a creative way and to sample taster sessions of other Languages. |
